New Trial Ordered for Ex-Coach in Admissions Scandal

U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani on Thursday ordered a new trial for a former University of Southern California drinking water polo coach convicted of accepting bribes to guarantee the admission of some candidates, the Los Angeles Times documented.

Jovan Vavic, the former mentor, was convicted in April.

Talwani ruled Thursday that prosecutors erred in their argument to jurors about some of the alleged bribe money.

Prosecutors claimed Vavic took more than $200,000 in bribes to pretend athletic credentials and designate faculty candidates as h2o polo athletes to get them admitted to USC. Authorities also stated he helped recruit other individuals, pointing to wiretap transcripts in which Vavic termed the arrangement a “win-win” circumstance and encouraged a fellow coach with doubts about the plan to “just do it.”

Vavic’s legal professionals argued that he was just fundraising for the college.

The decide explained, “However distasteful, there is very little inherently unlawful about a non-public establishment accepting cash in exchange for a student’s admission … The government’s argument is further more undermined listed here where by there was no suggestion that USC returned the dollars at the time the scheme was revealed.”

Also, she stated, “there was no proof in the file to counsel that Vavic was using USC water polo crew money for his have gain.”
